Despite the fact that so many people are unwilling to pay for addition features, I am still planning to start a subscriber service. These features will include:
  • Keep tracking of correctly/incorrectly answered questions
  • Keep tracking of topics/sections with a higher percentage of incorrectly answered questions
  • Calculation of a "score"
  • Ability to review incorrectly answered questions
  • Questions based on topic, not just section
  • A certification section, providing details on various certifications, tips and tricks on taking the tests,
direct links to certification specific content, and so forth.
  • Keeping track of visited pages so you can jump to new material.
  • A fancier PDF of the tutorial, with a glossary, index, and so forth
  • No advertisements
  • etc, etc, etc

It is reaching the point where I am no longer able to pay for everything out of my own pocket. I have chosen a professional data center services provider because I want to ensure that the site is up and running for everyone, without any bandwidth problems or anything else. All of this costs money out of my pocket.

Please keep in mind that I am not going to stop providing the current features or content for the people who do not subscribe. However, when adding new features, I will spend the time on things for the people who are helping me out. In this context "helping me out" also means contributing to the site. If you help code, provide content or other things to help out, then you will get a free subscription. Keep in mind that if just 0.1% (one tenth of a percent) of the people who use the site would contribute regularly, there would be dozens of contributors.

Also keep in mind that I am not talking about huge sums of money. It will probably be about $15 a year. When you consider how much more you can make being Linux certified, you could probably make that that much extra in a couple of hours. Then consider all of the features that already exist, plus the new ones.

Compare this site to Linux in general. You can download all of the components that go into a professional distribution like SUSE or RedHat on your own, but that would take you weeks. Then you have to go through the work of creating a bootable CD to install it. Then there is the issue of making sure the dependencies are all correct. Instead, you spend a few dollars to have someone do all of the work for you. All of the information on the site is available on the internet somewhere. I am just saving you the time of doing the work yourself. I am also presenting that information in an easy to access way. This is no different than what a teacher or training center does. However, most of it will still be free.

I am really curious as to why people would stop using the site if extra features were only available to subscribers. How about dropping me a line? If you aren't willing to comment in public, you can use the standard feedback form.

First let me say that your site is extremely useful as a tool in dealing with Linux. I have turned a few folks onto using your site so they could become more proficient in their jobs.

No matter how hard you strive to help others, there will always be those that want everything for free and refuse to pay for anything. These are the same individuals that get upset when someone is promoted above them because they don't have the initiative to excel. What have you got to lose if they quit the site? They will be replaced with people that will pay to use the site.

Look at the other sites that went to subscription as well as free content. Sure they lost some people but they gained even more people than the ones that left. Great content speaks for itself.

I really would like to hear why people don't want to pay. The fact that Linux is free doesn't come into play here. What comes into to play is the fact that all the hard work, time and effort that goes into this site should be rewarded, even if it is just to offset the money coming out of the authors pocket for Bandwidth and other assorted needs associated running a web site.
Whiners are whiners wherever you go!

First, I am new to this site and still trying to figure out if it is as good as it seems. So far it is, I see no reason to believe otherwise. For $15 a year, this is a steal and I would be onboard. A lot of work has gone into this site, and into making sure the information is accurate and up to date. Why shouldn't you charge a bit? Sh*t, $15 is nothing, that's like 3 coffees from Star*uck's, and this is a resource that can save someone's butt in a Linux crisis...is that a Linis?? Anyway, charge and I shall pay. Charge more and I shall pay more. Nice site.
